In a move to support sustainable fisheries management and boost livelihood, the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-7 (DA-BFAR-7) announces the lifting of the Closed Season in the portion of Visayan Sea, effective February 16, 2024.

Following the guidelines stipulated in Fisheries Administrative Order (FAO) 167-3, the annual fishing ban on sardines, mackerels, and herrings has been in place from November 15 to February 15, next year.

This measure aims to protect the breeding grounds of these crucial marine species during their spawning season.

The lifting of the closed season not only signals a return of fishing operations but also emphasizes the collaborative efforts between stakeholders and other government agencies to promote responsible fishing practices.

The monitoring control and surveillance unit of BFAR-7 apprehended two commercial trawler operators violating the closed season policy.

While the reopening of fishing grounds presents opportunities for increased catch and economic activity, DA-BFAR-7 reminds all fisherfolk and stakeholders to adhere to sustainable fishing practices and regulatory guidelines. Compliance with size limits, gear restrictions, and other conservation measures remains of greatest importance to ensure the long-term viability of our fishery resources.

During the lifting of the closed season, BFAR Region 7 collaborated closely with municipal stakeholders, including the mayors of Bantayan and Madridejos, Arthur Despi and Romeo Villaceran, respectively.

The presence of the municipal mayors emphasizes their commitment to sustainable fishing practices and their support for BFAR’s initiatives in the region.

“I am officially lifting the close season in [the portion of] Visayan Sea” Ruinata concluded.
